Helping you see what you don’t see, and then doing something about it.

Executives of small and mid-cap companies share a common vulnerability: a lack of familiarity with current investor priorities.

The observation that started the firm.

James Hasso spent more than two decades allocating capital to small and mid-cap companies, most recently as head of the small cap team at Voya Investment Management. From that seat, the same pattern kept appearing. The companies were well run and the management teams knew their operations cold. What they had no realistic way to know was what the people funding them had come to care about, and which of their own decisions were quietly working against them.

Nobody was telling them. Their advisors were selling something, their bankers were transacting, and nobody was simply sitting on their side of the table with an honest read of how the outside world saw the business. He built One 44 Advisory to be that.

Founder and CEO

James has evaluated companies as an analyst, held them as a portfolio manager, and made the decisions that determine whether capital arrives or leaves. It is a vantage point very few advisors bring to a management team, and it is the reason One 44 exists.

At Voya Financial

Before founding One 44, James was Managing Director and Head of US Small Cap Equities for Voya Financial, formerly ING, where he led the small cap team and served as portfolio manager for the small cap and SMID cap strategies. In that role he analysed thousands of companies across every major GICS industry, while building and maintaining relationships with a client base of global investors.

He adapted continually to a shifting landscape, developing depth in areas including digital currency, blockchain, and GSE governance, social and environmental practices.

Advisory and leadership

As a Voya leader, James acted in a range of advisory capacities. He was an influential voice to Voya’s US CEO and operational leaders through periods of strategic change, notably during ING’s IPO to become Voya. During the Financial Crisis he represented ING’s US Division on the firm’s Global Strategy Committee.

Externally, he has served as a government advisor on a range of matters, engaging with the Federal Reserve, US Treasury, FDIC, OCC, CFPB and the White House to provide insight on financial reform. He also serves on the FTSE Russell Americas Regional Equity Advisory Committee.

Community

A first-generation Arab American who cares deeply about supporting families and children in need, James is a board member of The New York Foundling and Chair of its Investment Committee. He is a former member of the Soles4Souls Advisory Council and the Americares National Leadership Council. He is also a member of the Centennial Society and the Economic Club of New York.
